The future of Bauxite :
China has become a net importer of Aluminum by 2016. It is expected that China may scale up its domestic production, which shall lead to an increased demand for Bauxite, more particularly for Indian Bauxite. Aluminum demand is growing around 1 million tons a year. Global Aluminum metal production is therefore expected to grow in the coming years. This trend is likely to push up the alumina capacities and in turn increasing the Bauxite production by about 5% per annum globally. Current projections are that this growth will continue at 6.9% per annum until 2030. Global bauxite consumption in 2014-15 was 235 million tonnes. Analysts forecast around +20MT Aluminum per annum by 2020 and an extra 110 MT Bauxite.
Existing capacity and current alumina plant expansions will be sufficient to meet market needs for the next 12 to 18 months but substantial new refining capacity and Bauxite supplies will be required after 2016. The supply chain of Aluminium from resource to end-user, thus has a strong future.
